This was the original design used to determine IF it was possible. We now know it is so it is another Maui original design that has altered our Art Jewelry world as we expand what is possible to do with lamp-work beads. This one-of-a-kind design incorporates several Kumihimo techniques. The numerous textures are created by first weaving the octopus onto dark blue Japanese silk cords to hold the octopus in place. We then used 16 bundles of light blue silk fiber on a Japanese Marudai braiding stand to weave (using the Oimatsu pattern). We lastly wove into the silk cords two different purple tones of unicorn beads for another design element. Then to add more texture we dropped in/out the dark purple cords out from the main braid as if the octopus arms were wrapping itself around the center of this necklace.
Recently we shared a similar handcrafted designed exhibited in the Hawaiian Handweaver's Hui "Surrounded by Water" collection of beaded designs with a fiber braid collection. We are now able to offer this to the public. This magnificent art necklace is finished with a sterling silver Sea Urchin magnet designed by "Gaskell and Shankey" to give the necklace an extra strong hold (see photo).
Our necklaces feel wonderful to wear and do require a little more care than our small beaded designs. To keep dust free store in the cardboard tube used to ship to you or similar container.

Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braid making technique that creates beautiful and durable interlaced necklaces and bracelets. This art form goes back hundreds of years as braids were made for use in armor of Samurai warriors. In modern times these braids are used for belts (obijime) on kimonos
