Continue ShoppingNew in 2024 we have invented several new designs with unique colors and designs. Akalei Designs continues innovating exclusively on Maui. All of our Glass Beaded Necklace Lei are handcrafted & woven using a Japanese braiding technique called "Kumihimo" on a wooden stand called a Marudai. We call our necklaces "Forever" Hawaiian Lei as they are made with hundreds of Japanese Glass Beads and/or Natural Fibers, so can last forever. We were showcased on "HI Now" in 2023 as part of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement / Pop-Up Marketplace and enjoy giving back to the efforts of Lahaina Strong and Kihei Canoe Club fundraising campaigns.
Black & Brown with Yellow Picasso "Forbidden Island" Inspired Necklace - 20"
This was a second design inspired by the reef fish seen while swimming off a beach in Kihei. The basic matte black beads are blended with Brown Picasso Seed Beads, yet we added yellow Picasso in between each segment to give it that "Forbidden Island" inspired look. This too is a simple statement design and perfect island inspired necklace. There is a strong black matte acrylic magnet end cap to ensure it is secure.
All of our necklaces were inspired by the beautiful multicolor rare shell necklaces made famous on the Hawaiian island of Ni'iHau (The Forbidden Island). This beautiful handcrafted "pukka choker" style necklace was made using hundreds of glass Japanese seed beads on multiple nylon cords that are woven together on a wooden Marudai stand.
Akalei is the Hawaiian word for "bead reflections" which describes this unique style only available here on Maui. We specialize in designing a wide range of modern yet familiar Hawaiian lei. Please send an email to info@akaleidesigns.com.
Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braid making technique that creates beautiful and strong interlaced cords. This art form goes back hundreds of years as braids were made for use in armor of Japanese samurai warriors. In modern times these braids are designed as belts (obijime) used on kimonos.
It is my goal to provide you with a long lasting, beautiful piece of jewelry that you will enjoy wearing for years to come. I take great care in the construction of my pieces to ensure just that. Please note: colors may slightly differ from their appearance on your display, as it depends on your monitor settings.
