Our Hawaiian Glass Beaded Lei are unique handcrafted designs made using a Japanese braiding technique of "Kumihimo." We gain inspiration from the 'āina surrounding us on Maui. Akalei reimagines traditional Hawaiian Lei using a blend of fibers, shells, glass beads and Lamp Work beads to create our handmade Forever Lei on a Marudai stand
Kumihimo Instructional Pattern Level 2 - (with YouTube Video Tutorial - Class) Oimatsu Ropes With Focal Beads (Marudai)
In this Second in the Series, the first is Oimatsu Rope Pattern Level One, you will receive instructions and Pattern/Tutorial for Kumihimo braiders with advanced skills working with beaded braid structures on a Marudai stand. Prerequisites include the Level One Oimatsu Tutorial, and Kumihimo skills including extensive Marudai braiding, attaching 16 Tama, and adding/adjusting counterweights while braiding.
We cover Intermediate Kumihimo braiding concepts with detailed photos and provide step-by-step instructions, YouTube video examples, technical insights and tips to create a unique braided Oimatsu Beaded braid. We plan on supplementing this Braiding Pattern with additional videos and links. The braid structures covered here include Continuous Beaded Braids (CBB), Edo-Yatsu, and Oimatsu Gumi (16 strands). Akalei Designs also retails finished products at: https://www.akaleidesigns.com/
This braid structure using beads is somewhat complex so an Advanced to Intermediate Kumihimo Braider on a Marudai is preferred if considering purchasing this digital pattern. In addition due to the number of beads involved using a bead spinner for loading of thousands of size 11/0 to 8/0 seed beads is useful but not required.
This pattern will result in a 18’ to 35” long necklace (it can be longer or shorter by adjusting the number of beads). NOTE: Users should be comfortable with winding Tama with beaded cords onto a Marudai, and adjusting counterweights as you braid is also important. I can provide 30 - 60 minute Zoom sessions to help you in the assembly or instruction of braiding.
